War Poet.ca - A CFAP Project by Suzanne Steele

to those who sit back

Leave well enough alone, spare them
back and forth chatter, radio call-in shows,
t.v., newspaper, blog rants, raves, letters,
op-eds, endless debates, unsolicited natter—
ultimately this man’s kin counted months,
weeks, days, ‘til he came home for good,
as once his mother counted newborn fingers,
newborn toes, waiting to bring him home.

You may not understand the call or why,
Afghanistan, wrung out, wasted, dusty land;
how Pte. Todd would dare to arc or stroll
someone else’s trouble. You don’t need to know;
leave it alone unless you’re there to help
his loved one’s bear their heavy, heavy load.
