Strap Hangers - a new term to add to the collection

just received this this a.m. from a Brig. Gen. (ret’d) who is filling me in on the life. in a correspondence he referred to himself as a Strap Hanger.

“The expression Strap Hangers is an old one. My grandfather, a Boer War, WWI, and WWII veteran used it when referring to those that hung around observing but no longer contributing. The straps referred to were leather and used on public transport. The straps hung from rails near the roof of the vehicles or subway cars and folks hung on to them as the made their way to and fro. Hence they were Strap Hangers!”

thanks B.G.
