sent to me today
Jun 16, 2009
I received this today from someone with whom I spent time in the village of “Spin Boldak,” Wainwrightistan. A village man, he took me for walks (women villagers must always be accompanied by a male). He gave me permission to reproduce this and I thank him.
My Best
Because I did my best
in Wainright,
A young soldier in Afghanistan
Made the right decision
And three villagers were not killed.
These three young villagers
And their two friends
Did not join the Taliban
IED’s were not planted
A village was not lost.
Eventually,
a school was built
a clinic was opened
a well was dug.
From my place in Alberta – that safe, happy place – I cannot make big waves
In Afghanistan
But our little ripples can spread
Further than we know.
