War Poet.ca - A CFAP Project by Suzanne Steele

one of them

one of them has a new posting
one of them has a new child
one of them has his first girlfriend
one of them, fresh out of uniform, has a new job

one of them has a new maple leaf
one of them has a new hook
one of them takes pinks so he won’t see hiding men
one of them swallows blues to get through the night

one of them learns to walk on new legs
one of them, learns again how to love
one of them reconnects with her children
one of them kits up for Ex, heads back onto war’s road

and one of them can no longer speak
by his hand his body’s grown cold
this one of them found after-war unbearable
hung with his secret untold.
