little Corner of England (17)
Mar 30, 2012
on reading Helen Thomas’ As It Was and World Without End
o this day this hot spring day
England o England magnolia starburst
the green urgent earth
yew hedges fat trees
purple fritillaria checkerboard
a word’s worth of narcissi
England o England
love scattered violets
on her pillow after childbirth
his son delivered the poet temporarily
from hill walk tock madness
(a soldier’s watch a death to come)
out of her body’s pear a son
(a son to watch over his death to come)
he gathered handfuls of pale sweet
scattered petals over this birth bed
as later she’d scatter tansy, thyme, lavender
rosemarinus remember love remember
over France
his soldier cross.
