letter from the mail bag

email from the mother of a fallen soldier:
my heart broke. 7:35 March 25th. ambulance. procedure. ICU. cardiac ward. I’m fit not fat. I eat well. I live well. nobody saw this coming

on the phone I said to her, “there’s no surprise in this for me. of course it would be your heart to break.”

“you’re the only one to see that symbolism” she replied.

“it comes with the job” I said.

she’s out of the woods, as they say in ICUs. up and about and walking and chatting and doing cardiac exercise class.

but some things never mend.
