jacked up (again)

ya well I opened my mouth at a graduate thingy and when asked, told a fellow PhD who comes from a country that is in the middle of an absolute shitshow what the subject of my dissertation is.

I thought Canada was a nice country… she said when I told her we’re part of NATO and were in A’stan. not like the _ _ or the _ _ who always have to intervene she said. (and she’s been living here for 6 years doing her PhD)

I didn’t engage. politely said, I don’t judge, I don’t do political

but how can you not be political?

yes, well that’s a good question isn’t it? I reply

and I’ve been jacked up by a Canadian Doctor at my daughter’s violin recital, and by a famous Canadian poet because I spent time witnessing Canadians in Afghanistan… I don’t feel like being jacked up at unie by a fellow PhD who has her own opinions and beliefs (she wears her religion by covering her hair and that’s cool by me), and whose country, quite frankly, is a total shitshow and has been for a long, long time.

oh, was that a political statement? I take it back.

Whether or not speaking truth is political should not stop you from doing it. Artists ought never to tell lies in their work; that path leads inevitably to the undeniably political output of Leni Riefenstahl and the like. Of course, there’s no need to be a jerk about it, but better to risk offending someone than to torpedo yourself and your message through acquiescence. If you can’t trust a poet, who can you trust?
