Afghanistan: Requiem for a Generation
Jan 9, 2012
this morning an email from my composer, Jeffrey Ryan
with whom I’m collaborating on Afghanistan: Requiem for a Generation. in the email he sent the first section of the first movement which will have a mini-premiere with singers and pianist in Calgary, January 26, 2012, as part of the High Performance Rodeo. Jeff and I will be giving a short talk on the Requiem and the singers will perform a short excerpt.
I’ve been developing this Requiem for over a year and a half. Jeff came on board a little over a year ago. it’s a whole new collaborative game for me. I’ve worked with actors, directors, musicians, but never a composer, and this is both exciting and a little unnerving. and this morning when I opened Jeff’s email and looked at my text set to music I was indeed excited and unnerved. unnerved as in, oh my God, it’s really happening and it’s not just an idea.
the premiere is to be in Calgary with the Philharmonic, chorus, children’s chorus and four soloists TBA. November 9, 2012 I believe. it’s going to be a world first. cross your fingers for me that my words will be good.
yes, I’m nervous… meanwhile, I’ve a PhD to dig into…
